Participate in a Boat Engineering-Design Challenge inspired by trailblazing Naval Engineer and local "Hidden Figure," Raye Montague. Can you make a clay object that can float the most weight?

The North Little Rock Mobile Makerspace is excited to participate in the Kids Zone for the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center's Juneteenth in Da Rock celebration.

We will have a hands-on engineering/design activity, challenging participants to create an object out of clay that can carry the most weight.

This fun STEM challenge was inspired by the life and contributions of U.S. Naval Engineer and Arkansas native, Raye Jean Jordan Montague.

Born in Little Rock during Jim Crow, Raye was told she could never be an engineer because she had three strikes against her, being a black woman from the south.  Extraordinarily, she overcame all of the odds and barriers erected in her way to become the Navy's first female Program Manager of Ships, a civilian rank equivalent to Captain.   Raye is credited with being the first person to draft a ship using Computer code, transforming the fields of Computer Science and Engineering, while saving the Navy months in production and hundreds of manhours.  Montague would go on to become division head of Computer Aided Design for the Navy and designed Frigates, the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier, and Sea-wolf class submarines.

With many opportunities to test, fail, and revise designs, this activity emphasizes:

  • the iterative nature of the engineering design process,
  • explores the physics of buoyancy, and
  • highlights the contributions of a local “Hidden Figure.”
