Artist Statement:
For this series I painted a variety of bugs on tea bags using watercolor. For several years now, I've been interested in using unorthodox materials in my work. During this time, I have worked on repurposing items such as cardboard, scrap wood, metal, and in this case, tea bags. Taking inspiration from another artist, I began my own experimentation with this material. I chose this subject matter because it was reminiscent of collections in a display case. Similar to these preserved items, the tea bags are fragile and need to be handled carefully. I leave the tea bags untreated, letting the paper and artwork take its natural course over the years. Both the subject matter and material could be considered mundane , but in this way, the ordinary becomes a little more extraordinary.
