Dormant Realms
I often find myself wishing I was somewhere else. The feeling comes over me when I'm driving home from work. I'll notice the pinkish light of 5'oclock reflecting off a tall pine tree and suddenly feel present in a new space.
My paintings attempt to capture those fleeting moments. I use color to suggest light and shadow of imagined landscapes. Flat planes of muted color obscure the sense of space between vaguely familiar forms. Bare mountains, broken aqueducts, floating clouds, and empty doorways welcome the viewer to a familiar but distant world.
These works start as digital thumbnail sketches. I draw them while sitting on the couch with the TV on in the background. The distraction helps occupy my mind while my eyes and hands do the work. Later I take the pre-prepared sketches into the studio and recreate them with acrylic paint on canvas or panels.
