Artist Statement

My paintings are layered and complex, just like people. By incorporating elements such as collage, water-soluble graphite, and chalk pastels in the early stages, I build up a rich visual history for my paintings before finishing them with oil paint, leaving visible traces of the piece’s past. In this way, my art honors the complexity of our individual stories while recalling the truth that, like fingerprints, every person is unique; and like flowers, every soul is beautiful. My work often features both hands and flowers, affirming that every conversation–personal or collective–must start with the recognition that each person is worthy of love and imbued with purpose.

About Marissa Thornberry

Marissa Thornberry is a mixed media and oil painter known for her serene imagery, often fusing the human figure (especially hands) with florals and landscapes in an abstract realism style. Her art celebrates the dignity, depth, and unique beauty of individuals and the stories they carry, encouraging recovering people pleasers and perfectionists like herself to explore and expose their own inner worlds. After spending eight transformative years in a rural Honduran town, where she spearheaded various arts-based community initiatives, Marissa returned to her birthplace of Little Rock, Arkansas in 2023. Immersed in the city's rich diversity and fascinating history, she has found abundant inspiration for her visual storytelling. Marissa studied at the Milan Art Institute, and her art has found homes in private collections around the globe, spanning from the U.S. and Canada to Colombia, Honduras, and the U.K.
